Directors

Melissa H. Anderson , Director since 2019

Ms. Anderson is the former Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer for Duke Energy, one of the largest energy holding companies in the United States. Her corporate experience also includes a 17-year tenure with the Fortune 100 company, IBM Corp., for which she served as Vice President of Human Resources of Global Financing. She also served as Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Government Relations for The Pantry Inc. from 2006 to 2010.

Ms. Anderson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial relations from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.

She serves on the boards of directors of the Society of Human Resource Management and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. She is also a member of the Center for Executive Succession at the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business.

Thomas A. Fanning , Director since 2015

Mr. Fanning has been with Southern Company, one of America's largest energy companies, for over 35 years and has served as its Chairman, President and CEO since 2010. In that role, Mr. Fanning has guided Southern Company’s leadership in developing a full portfolio of energy resources and has strengthened the company’s culture of innovation and customer focus. Active as a leader in the business arena, Mr. Fanning serves as Chairman of the Electricity Subsector Coordinating Council, which serves as the principal liaison between the federal government and the electric power sector to protect the electric grid from threats that could impact national security. He is also a member of the Business Roundtable and previously served as Chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

O. B. Grayson Hall, Jr. , Director since 2014

Mr. Hall is the former Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Regions Financial Corporation, one of the largest bank holding companies in the United States. He held these positions from May 2013 until his retirement in December 2018. Mr. Hall was elected Vice Chairman and a member of the Boards of Directors of Regions Financial Corporation and Regions Bank in 2008, and President and Chief Executive Officer from April 2010 to May 2013. Mr. Hall also serves on the boards of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama and the Birmingham Business Alliance.

J. Thomas Hill ,

Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer

Director since 2014

Tom Hill was elected chairman of the board for Vulcan Materials Company in December 2015, and president and chief executive officer in July 2014. Mr. Hill has been with Vulcan for more than 25 years, serving in a variety of operations and general management assignments of increasing responsibility since first joining the Company in 1979. Prior to being named CEO, Mr. Hill was executive vice president and chief operating officer for the Company, having previously served as senior vice president of Vulcan's South Region. Mr. Hill has also served as president of Vulcan's former Florida Rock Division, as well as the Company's Southwest Division. Mr. Hill worked for Redlands Stone Products from 1990 to 1996 in sales and operations management, before rejoining Vulcan as vice president and general manager of the Company's Southwest Division. Mr. Hill is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and the Wharton School of Business, Executive Management Program.

Cynthia L. Hostetler , Director since 2014

Ms. Hostetler serves as a Trustee of Invesco Ltd. and is a member of the boards of TriLinc Global Fund and Genesee & Wyoming Inc. From 2001 to 2009, Ms. Hostetler served as Head of Investment Funds and Private Equity at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). She also served on the Board of Directors of Edgen Group, a global energy infrastructure company, prior to its acquisition by Sumitomo. Additionally, she has served as President and a member of the Board of Directors of First Manhattan Bancorporation, a bank holding company in the Midwest. She began her career as a corporate lawyer with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York. Ms. Hostetler also serves on the board of Resideo Technologies, Inc.

Richard T. O’Brien , Director since 2008

Mr. O’Brien is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Boart Longyear Limited, the world’s leading provider of drilling services, drilling equipment and performance tooling for mining and drilling companies. He held these positions from April 2013 to October 2015. Mr. O’Brien also held several leadership positions at Newmont Mining Corporation, an international gold production company. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer from 2007 until February 2013, President and Chief Financial Officer from 2006 and 2007, and Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from 2005 to 2006. Prior to Newmont Mining Corporation, Mr. O’Brien was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, AGL Resources, a natural gas distribution, marketing and energy service company, from 2001 until 2005. Mr. O’Brien also serves on the boards of Xcel Energy Inc., Pretivm Resources, Inc. and Ma’aden, a Saudi Arabian mining company.

James T. Prokopanko , Director since 2009

Senior Advisor of The Mosaic Company, Plymouth, Minnesota (one of the world’s leading producers and marketers of concentrated phosphate and potash crop nutrients), since August 2015. Mr. Prokopanko was Mosaic’s President and Chief Executive Officer from January 2007 to August 2015; Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 2006 until 2007. Prior to joining Mosaic, Mr. Prokopanko was Corporate Vice President of Cargill, Incorporated.

Mr. Prokopanko also serves on the boards of Regions Financial Corporation and Xcel Energy, Inc.

Kathleen L. Quirk , Director since 2017

Ms. Quirk is the Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., a leading international mining company. She has over twenty-five years of experience in the Freeport-McMoRan organization and has played key roles in the organization’s financings and corporate transactions. During her career, she has held positions of increasing responsibility in tax, investor relations, corporate development, treasury and finance.

David P. Steiner , Director since 2017

Mr. Steiner is the former Chief Executive Officer of Waste Management, Inc., a provider of integrated waste management services, serving in that role from 2004 through October 2016. He currently serves on the board of directors of FedEx Corporation.

Lee J. Styslinger, III , Director since 2013

Mr. Styslinger is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Altec Inc., a holding company for businesses that design, manufacture, and market equipment for the electric and telecommunications industries globally. He has over 20 years of experience leading companies engaged in the heavy equipment industry.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and his M.B.A. from Harvard University.

Mr. Styslinger serves on the boards of Regions Financial Corporation and Workday, Inc. He also serves on the boards of many educational, civic, and leadership organizations, including the Harvard Business School and the National Association of Manufacturers.

George Willis , Director since 2020

Mr. Willis is President, U.S. Operations for UPS, a global leader in logistics, offering a broad range of solutions including transporting packages and freight, facilitating international trade, and deploying advanced technology to more efficiently manage the world of business. He has served in this position since 2018. Mr. Willis serves on the UPS Management Committee, which is responsible for long-term strategy and operating plans for the company’s worldwide operations. Mr. Willis has more than 35 years of experience in logistics and operations, including managing a diverse transportation product portfolio in a range of domestic and international markets.

Mr. Willis earned a Bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from Trinity College. He completed the Columbia Executive Education Program and the Yale CEO College Program.

Mr. Willis has a long history of board membership and community involvement. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Airlines for America, is a member of the Executive Leadership Council and serves on the Board of Trustees for the National Urban League.

J. Thomas Hill , Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer

Suzanne H. Wood , Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Suzanne Wood is senior vice president and chief financial officer for Vulcan Materials Company. She joined the Company and was appointed to her current role on September 1, 2018. Prior to joining Vulcan, Ms. Wood was group finance director and chief financial officer from 2012 to 2018 at Ashtead Group plc, a FTSE 50 international equipment rental company serving the construction industry and other markets.  Previously, Ms. Wood was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Sunbelt Rentals, Inc., the North American subsidiary of Ashtead Group plc.  A certified public accountant, Ms. Wood also held chief financial officer positions at Tultex Corporation and Oakwood Homes Corporation.  Ms. Wood is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Thompson S. Baker II , Chief Operating Officer

Tom Baker is chief operating officer for Vulcan Materials Company. He previously served as senior vice president with senior corporate management responsibility for the Mideast, Southeast, Southwest and Southern & Gulf Coast Divisions. Prior to serving as senior vice president, Mr. Baker was president and chief executive officer of Patriot Transportation Holding, Inc. and Florida Rock Properties. Mr. Baker also served as president of Vulcan’s Florida Rock Division from 2008 to 2010. Prior to that, Mr. Baker spent 24 years in various leadership capacities at Florida Rock Industries, Inc., before its acquisition by Vulcan in 2007.
Mr. Baker is a graduate of Davidson College with a Bachelor of Science degree in History.

Stanley G. Bass , Chief Growth Officer

Stan Bass is chief growth officer for Vulcan Materials Company. Mr. Bass has served in a variety of operations and general management assignments since first joining the Company in 1996. Prior to his current position, Mr. Bass was senior vice president of the West Region. He has also served as senior vice president of the Central Region and president of the Midsouth and Southwest Divisions.

Mr. Bass graduated from Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.  He also attended the Wharton School of Business Advanced Management Program.

Mr. Bass serves on the board of the National Asphalt Pavement Association.

Denson N. Franklin III , Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary

Mr. Franklin joined Vulcan Materials Company in December 2019 as senior vice president and general counsel. Prior to joining Vulcan, Mr. Franklin was a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP in Birmingham, Alabama. While at Bradley, he served as Vulcan's primary outside counsel for more than 20 years and advised other companies in the construction materials, building and engineering industries. He brings a wealth of experience from his years counseling companies large and small on mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, compliance, securities issues, and overseas operations and acquisitions.

Mr. Franklin was recognized in Chambers USA in the area of Corporate/Commercial law and is listed in The Best lawyers of America® in the areas of Business Organizations, Closely Held Companies and Family Business Law, Corporate Compliance/Governance Law, Corporate Law, Leveraged Buyouts and Private Equity Law, and Mergers & Acquisitions Law.

Mr. Franklin earned a bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College and received his law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School.

He is Chairman of the Birmingham-Southern College Board of Trustees, a member of the Birmingham Rotary Club and Vice Chairman of Gateway, a nonprofit organization providing family and financial counseling and foster care services.

David P. Clement , Senior Vice President, Mountain West and Western Divisions

David Clement is senior vice president of the Mountain West and Western Divisions. Mr. Clement has over 25 years of experience at Vulcan, serving in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility. Mr. Clement first joined the organization as an operations management trainee in 1983 and progressed to the position of area production manager in 1993. After spending a few years at Pioneer Mid-Atlantic and working as a consultant, Mr. Clement rejoined Vulcan in 2004 as vice president and general manager of the Midwest Division. He has held the positions of vice president of operations for the Midwest Division, vice president and general manager of the Central Region, senior vice president of the Central Region, and most recently as president of the Central Division of Vulcan Materials Company. Mr. Clement is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and holds an MBA from Samford University. Mr. Clement serves on the board of directors of the Tennessee Road Builders Association and the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.

Jerry F. Perkins Jr. , Senior Vice President, Southern & Gulf Coast and Southwest Divisions

Jerry Perkins is senior vice president of the Southern & Gulf Coast and Southwest Divisions. Prior to his current position, Mr. Perkins was president of the Southern and Gulf Coast Division. He also served as general counsel and corporate secretary and various legal leadership roles for Vulcan Materials Company. Before joining Vulcan in 2002, Mr. Perkins worked as a certified public accountant (CPA) at a global accounting firm and was an attorney with Burr & Forman LLP in Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Perkins has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Alabama and received a law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law, where he was a senior editor of the Alabama Law Review. Mr. Perkins serves on the board of directors of the Birmingham YMCA, Birmingham Zoo and Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Jason P. Teter , Senior Vice President, Mideast and Southeast Divisions

Jason Teter is senior vice president of the Mideast and Southeast Divisions. Prior to his current position, Mr. Teter was president of the Southeast Division. He joined Vulcan in 2013 as vice president of business development. He also served as vice president of finance for Vulcan Materials Company and president of the Southern and Gulf Coast Division. Before joining Vulcan, he spent ten years in various finance, business development and general management positions with Lafarge North America. Mr. Teter has an Executive MBA from Georgetown University and a bachelor of science degree in Accounting from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Mr. Teter serves on the board of directors of the Georgia Construction Aggregates Association.

C. Wes Burton, Jr. , Vice President and Treasurer

Wes Burton joined Vulcan Materials Company in May 2011 as vice president and treasurer. Prior to joining Vulcan, Mr. Burton was most recently a management consultant with the Enterprise Performance Management Strategy practice group of Accenture LLP, managing director for Marsh USA, Inc. and senior vice president and treasurer at Saks Incorporated.

Mr. Burton began his career with fourteen years of corporate finance experience at two different banks, covering the building products, business services, and retail industry sectors. Mr. Burton earned a B.S. degree in management (business/finance) from Georgia Tech.

Mary Andrews Carlisle , Vice President, Finance

Mary Andrews Carlisle is vice president of finance for Vulcan Materials Company. She joined Vulcan in May 2006 and has held various leadership roles within the Company’s accounting and finance departments. Prior to her current position, Ms. Carlisle was vice president of financial planning, analysis and reporting. She also served as vice president of business development and vice president of finance for the Company’s Southern and Gulf Coast Division. Ms. Carlisle earned her bachelor’s degree in Economics and Spanish from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the University of Alabama. Ms. Carlisle serves on the board of directors of the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama.

Kevin T. Halcomb , Vice President, Tax

Kevin Halcomb is vice ​president of tax for Vulcan Materials Company. Since joining Vulcan in 2009, Mr. Halcomb has served in several tax positions of increasing responsibility. Prior to joining Vulcan, ​he spent the first ten years of his career as a consultant in Ernst & Young’s business tax services practice.

Mr. Halcomb is a graduate of the University of Alabama where he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in tax accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant.

Janet F. Kavinoky , Vice President, External Affairs and Corporate Communications

Janet Kavinoky is vice president, external affairs and corporate communications of Vulcan Materials Company. She is responsible for the community, governmental and regulatory affairs of the corporation, its corporate communications initiatives, as well as the company’s charitable giving and political action committee programs. Ms. Kavinoky previously served as vice president of federal and state governmental affairs. Before joining Vulcan in September 2015, she was executive director for transportation & infrastructure at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She was honored by the Journal of Commerce as one of the 10 “most influential people in transportation” in 2010. Ms. Kavinoky began her career at the U.S. Department of Transportation, ultimately serving as a special assistant to the Secretary of Transportation. Ms. Kavinoky earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Economy from the University of Wyoming and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In Alabama, Ms. Kavinoky serves on the boards of the Red Mountain Theatre Company, YouthServe, and the A+ Education Partnership. She also serves on the board of Infrastructure Week and the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues, and the advisory boards of the Eno Center for Transportation and George Mason University Center for Transportation Public-Private Partnership Policy.

Larry W. Miller , Vice President, Human Resources

Larry Miller serves as the vice president of human resources in the construction materials group. Mr. Miller joined Vulcan in 2000 after twenty years in various human resource roles with Burlington Industries. Beginning as director of human resources and administration for the Company’s Mideast Division, Mr. Miller became the vice president of human resources and administration for the Mideast Division in 2008. In 2010 he became vice president of human resources for the Florida Rock Division, before assuming his current role in 2012.

Mr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business from Appalachian State University.

Randy L. Pigg , Vice President and Controller

Randy Pigg is vice president and controller for Vulcan Materials Company. Mr. Pigg joined Vulcan in August 2005 and has held various leadership roles with the Company's accounting and finance departments. In his most recent role, Mr. Pigg served as Vulcan's vice president of accounting.

Mr. Pigg earned his master's degree in accounting from the University of Alabama and has a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Alabama at Huntsville.

Lindsay L. Sinor , President, Vulcan Lands, Inc.

Lindsay Sinor is assistant general counsel for Vulcan Materials Company and vice president of Vulcan Lands. Prior to joining Vulcan in 1992, Ms. Sinor was an attorney with Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP in Birmingham, Alabama.

Ms. Sinor has a bachelor’s degree in art history from Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia and she received her law degree from Fordham University School of Law in New York, New York.

Ms. Sinor is a co-founder of Vulcan’s Women’s Leadership Council and now serves on the Steering Committee for the Vulcan Women’s Network.

L. Todd Vencil , Vice President, Business Development

Mr. Vencil serves as the vice president of business development. Mr. Vencil joined Vulcan in July 2016. Mr. Vencil previously worked as the managing director, equity research with Sterne Agee and Leach/Sterne Agee CRT in Richmond, Virginia, where he followed companies in a variety of industries, including construction materials and building products. Mr. Vencil earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia with a dual major in Philosophy and English Literature, and is a CFA charterholder.

Mark D. Warren , Vice President, Investor Relations

Mark Warren, vice president, investor relations for Vulcan Materials Company. He joined Vulcan in 2000 as the manager of financial analysis and reporting and assumed his current role in 2006. In December 2015, Mr. Warren was voted among the Best IR Professionals in the 2016 All-American Executive Team Survey conducted by Institutional Investor. Prior to joining Vulcan, he held positions of increasing responsibility in both finance and operations in the construction industry.

Mr. Warren earned a bachelor of science in Construction Science from Texas A&M University and an MBA from the Georgia Institute of Technology.


Construction Materials Officers

Christina M. Alvord , President, Central Division

Ms. Alvord serves as the vice president of corporate planning and performance improvement. Ms. Alvord joined Vulcan in August 2016. Prior to joining Vulcan, Ms. Alvord held various executive management positions across the United States at GE Aviation, including president of both GE Aviation-Unison Industries and GE Aviation-Middle River Aircraft Systems. She most recently served as general manager, engine component repair and general manager, turbine airfoils center of excellence in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ms. Alvord earned her MBA from Harvard University. She has Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
