Don James has been the chief executive officer of Vulcan Materials Company since 1996 and chairman since 1997. In his tenure with the Company, Mr. James has also served as the senior vice president of the South Region and as president of the Southern Division. He was originally hired as Vulcan’s senior vice president and general counsel.
Mr. James joined Vulcan in 1992 after a long and successful career with Bradley, Arant, Rose & White, where he was a partner and a member of the Executive Committee.
Mr. James holds a bachelor’s degree and an M.B.A. from the University of Alabama. After serving as a first lieutenant in the United States Army, Mr. James earned a J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law where he was the executive editor of Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif.
Mr. James is active in a number of business, civic, and industry organizations. He currently serves as a director on the boards of Southern Company and Wells Fargo & Company. In 2006 he served as chairman of the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA).
Mr. James is also a director for the Birmingham Business Alliance, Birmingham Museum of Art, Boy Scouts of Central Alabama, United States Chamber of Commerce, UAB Health System, the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, and the Independent Presbyterian Church Foundation. He serves as a trustee for Birmingham-Southern College, Children’s Hospital, and the Hugh Kaul Foundation, and is a member of the University of Alabama President’s Cabinet and of the Business Advisory Council.
